CHAPTER 27

Papa wanted me to have an idea of what I would need to know if I were to qualify for the Summon’s Apprenticeship, of what a fight with magic would be like. A real fight and not one from one of my books.

Consequently, he arranged for me to observe a sparring match between Johnny, Tristan, Charlie, and Mr. Shield in the Combat Room in the basement of the Gentlemen’s Weapons Mastery Club. The room, for tonight, appeared as a city street, with doorways, boxes, a balcony, and a “captive” as the goal (a team of two defending and two attacking). Papa and I watched from behind a glass barrier, in one of three small rooms overlooking the arena.

A buzzer sounded somewhere, and the men took up their positions—Johnny and Mr. Shield as the attackers and Tristan and Charlie defending—and then began.

There were flashes and explosions (Johnny was fond of those); magical shields that flared in the lantern light and by magic; and bullets and knives, which were usually deflected by smaller, detached shields. Shields require a great deal of magic and strength to create and maintain—I have a rudimentary knowledge of them but sorely lack practice. This will soon change, Devryn said.

While Johnny would block or counter spells, Mr. Shield would catch them. As a half-magic, he can absorb magic naturally, to a certain extent, and put it in his collection device or transform it into a shield or a spell. But even strong half-magics are limited. Mr. Shield was hit with a lot of magic, but it seemed to disappear into his heavy gloves. Papa said that half-magics can use wand wood fiber gloves or borrowed wands to better handle the magic in these lessons and on missions. I’d seen the protective gloves used a few times in Brady’s and Johnny’s practices, but Brady’s had never glowed in the palms as Mr. Shield’s did. If I were not imagining it, it lit with an outline of a shield.

In the end, Tristan and Charlie managed to overcome Johnny and Mr. Shield. I wasn’t sure if Mr. Shield wasn’t as trained in warfare as those normally assigned to the Summon’s Apprentices, or if he was holding back to force Johnny to work harder. Either way, it was an excellent match overall—so Papa said, and he would know. It was a challenge to me to work hard to match their skill.
